The Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences was devoted to the study on "Advanced Inorganic Materials Science and Technology" as her research orientation. The Institute has become a comprehensive research organization with basic research as pioneer, and with hi-tech materials innovation, together with their applied research and development as main body. Besides, she has been formed as a rather complete research complex, including "Fundamental research, Applied and Developed research, Engineering research and Production", of coarse, with their mutual cooperation. For the time being, the main research field covers structural ceramics and composites, inorganic functional ceramics, artificial single crystals, inorganic coatings, special glasses, biological ceramics and texture engineering material, environmental and energy source material, space material and engineering, the analysis, testing and characterization of inorganic materials as well as the science and technology study on Chinese Ancient Ceramics, etc. In recent years, amount of 601 research achievements were accomplished in the Institute and 316 items owned the scientific and technical awards from national, Chinese Academy of Sciences as well as ministries or provinces. Among them, 24 achievements were conferred with National Invention Prize, 5 with National Natural Science Prize and 13 with National Science and Technology Advanced Prize. Thus it can be seen that the Institute has fruitfully accomplished extensive and remarkable contributions to the development of science and technology, the economic construction. as well as the social progress of our country. Meanwhile, large numbers of qualified and talented researchers were fostered and educated by the institute for the development of our national science cause related to the inorganic materials.
