The first Canadian Costco Wholesale warehouse opened in 1985 in Burnaby, BC. During the first 8 years of operations in Canada, customers (called members) needed to be business owners or work for the government to be eligible for membership. In 1993, Costco changed these requirements and opened membership to businesses and the general public.
