Founded by two Scotsmen, Stephen George Balmer and Alexander Lawrie, in Kolkata, Balmer Lawrie & Co. Ltd. started its corporate journey as a Partnership Firm on 1st February 1867. Traversing the years gone by, today Balmer Lawrie is a Miniratna I Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. The Company completed 150 years on 1st February 2017. It holds a rare distinction of having earned profits year after year, without a single year of loss since inception. Balmer Lawrie is a much-respected transnational diversified conglomerate with presence in both manufacturing and service sectors. Balmer Lawrie is a market leader in Logistics, Steel Barrels, Specialty Greases & Lubricants, Travel & Vacations and Leather Chemicals. Balmer Lawrie has eight business units – Logistics Infrastructure, Logistics Services, COLD CHAIN, Travel & Vacations, Industrial Packaging, Greases & Lubricants, Chemicals and Refinery & Oil Field Services with offices spread across the country and abroad. Balmer Lawrie also grew inorganically through various JVs over the period of time. Balmer Lawrie & Community Balmer Lawrie's CSR initiatives are founded on two Flagship Schemes Balmer Lawrie Initiative for Self Sustenance [BLISS] and Samaj Mein Balmer Lawrie [SAMBAL]. While the first Scheme is directed at providing and improving the long term economic sustenance of the underprivileged, the second Scheme aims at improving the living standards of populations in and around the Company's work-centers. In pursuance of this the Company has undertaken several community development projects, partnering with various NGOs with a focus to trigger development at micro-community level and thereby generate the desired developmental impact.
