The origin of Nagasaki University can be traced back to the time when Pompe van Meerdervoort, a medical officer at the Naval Training Center, began medical education in a room in the West Office of the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office on November 12, 1857. Its direct predecessor was Nagasaki Medical College, founded in 1923, one of the six former government medical colleges; in 1949, the college and other national institutions in Nagasaki were merged to form a university. Undergraduate Faculties include: Faculty of Education, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Environmental Studies, Faculty of Fisheries, School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, Faculty of Economics, School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences, and School of Information and Data Sciences. Graduate Schools include: Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Economics, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Graduate School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, and Graduate School of Global Humanities and Social Sciences. Research Instituteions are: Institute of Tropical Medicine, Atomic Bomb Diseases Institute and National Research Center for the Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases. Others are: University Hospital, DEJIMA Infectious Disease Research Alliance, etc.
