Kusama is a scalable, multi-chain network that serves as a testing ground for blockchain developers. Founded in 2019 by Gavin Wood, it acts as a "canary network" for Polkadot projects, allowing developers to experiment with new features and applications in a real-world environment. Kusama provides a public pre-production space where developers can refine their blockchain projects using real cryptocurrency (KSM). The network supports the deployment of customizable parachains, enabling various applications while leveraging the security of its main relay chain. Kusama also facilitates cross-chain communication through its Cross-Chain Message Passing (XCMP) protocol. Its decentralized governance model allows token holders to participate in decision-making processes, with a quick voting and enactment period of 15 days. Built using the Substrate framework, Kusama utilizes a Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) consensus system, allowing for efficient on-chain upgrades and rapid development cycles.
